How to Avoid Idling

There are a few simple ways to reduce idle time.

Turn off the car. If you will be waiting for more than 30 seconds, except in traffic, you will save gas. Only 10 seconds of idling uses more gas than restarting but for the sake of convince most use the 30 second rule.

Avoid remote starters. These handy doohickeys make it easy to forget the car's on.

Prime Idling Zones

"Drive-thrus." Instead of making your car wait in line, park and go inside. Going in often saves time and always saves gas.

Railroad crossings. Most trains travel slowly at intersections. It's a safe bet that more than 30 seconds will go by when waiting for a train.

Outside buildings. When waiting for a friend at a store or school, think about turning off your car. The radio and CD player will still work and you won't fill the air around you with pollution.

No parking zones. Many people think that it's better to idle in a no parking zone than sit looking out for the enforcers with the car off. Having the car on won't necessarily save you from a ticket and wastes gas.
